Taylor Hicks 3.4.07

So you didn't get into the sold out show by American Idol winner Taylor Hicks at the Orange Peel. Did you sit home and pout about it, or were you one of the twenty-eight people who came to hang out at the Grey Eagle after the Tea Leaf Green show? If you were in the later category, you were treated to an impromtu (free) 45 minute set by Taylor and The Greyhounds, including Supertramps' "Goodbye Stranger," "New York State of Mind," "Minute by Minute," and Elton Johns' "Levon" and "Border Song." Not only was the Eagle open until 3 AM, but it became a smoking bar for two hours. Crazy....If you're in the former category, you'd probably need pictures to believe it, huh? I never thought you'd ask....in response to all the comments, this was not planned; the guys just came by to hang out with some friends and ended up on stage for part of their stay. They were all very pleasant and glad to play music for the small crowd.

How lucky those people were. That's what Taylor loves, singing and jamming with friends.

I wasn't pouting then but I am now. I thrilled he was able to do this and pray that one day I'll be one of the twenty eight! ;0)

You lucky dog!! Tell us more; how did you know Taylor would stop by; was he just on an adrenalin high and still stoked from the concert or is he just a ball of energy?

Thanks for the photos -- send them to his blog (check with info@graycharles.com for instructions).

Looks like Taylor's touring band was there too. . .what a treat!

And how did he sit still long enough for pix of him not moving to be taken?

It doesn't get any better than this. . .

Man, I am so glad that these guys got a chance to just hang out and play for fun. Great for the audience, but life's blood for Taylor and rest, I'd imagine. This kind of thing feeds the music, not to mention the soul. Very cool, and thanks for reporting it

It was great to see Taylor play again! We have a great group of friends and we never get to see Taylor just chill and sing anymore! It was a time well needed to hang out and catch up on old times! We have a tight group of friends!

WOW. I was wondering at first why he had his toboggan on in those pictures but then after I thought about it, it's probably because of the whole "headlight" thing. Awesome story! The world would be a better place if every musician were like Taylor Hicks... then again, we all know they can't. LOL

Why is anyone worrying about the toboggan? and headlight that sounds ridiculous. Obviously it was a cool night in a small club perhaps not much heat in the bar - I remember many of those in - and wow, he looks hot. Just want to feel that sweater.

Thanks to all for the comments...Here's what insight I have to offer: The two times I've seen Taylor in public, not during a performance, he's been wearing the hat. I've seen how he is constantly surrounded by fans wanting his attention (the same goes for many other musicians who perform at the Grey Eagle), and this can be very daunting, never having a single moment to yourself. When he got on stage, almost every person gathered around, taking pictures with cameras, cell phones, etc. He seems to be a pretty down-to-earth person who had a lot dropped on him just a few months ago. The hat is a way he is able to remain incognito without being hounded like this all the time. As you all have proven, you have much respect for the guy, and individually I'm sure he'd be glad to sit and chat with each one of you, as he did last night. But when you recieve more votes than the president, and those numbers are lumped together, I imagine that can be a scary thing. He was in the Grey Eagle for over two hours, just being 'one of the guys,' without signing any autographs or having constant attention on him while hanging with friends. I do know that he is very appreciative of everyone's support, and was glad to talk and take pics with anyone who asked (see Candid pics link at top right of page).

What a lovely opportunity for Taylor to be himself with his friends for once. When everyone wants a piece of you, can you imagine how good this must have felt for him. Shine on, Taylor, we love you!

I have to confess, I was one of the 'lucky 28'. We didn't know it was so few people going to this. We were invited and had a blast! The Greyhounds rockfunksoulblues guys, Anthony, Andrew, & Johnny are awesome! And Felix, Al, Loren, Brian are just great guys with big hearts!! These guys needed this break from the hundreds of screaming fans, and just needed some chill time. I still can't believe I was there with my awesome, awesome friends! It was truly an evening to remember! I made some new friends, that was the best part, by far!

Well, it's more than a year later, and one of the very lucky and generous audience members at the Grey Eagle that amazing evening has shared his/her audio files with TaysHarmonica. TH has in turn graciously posted a large part of the audio clips from that impromptu performance on her wonderful Taylor Hicks media blog, RightHicksSave:

Scroll down or click backwards to June 28-July 1st posts to get to the Vimeo audio links..

Wow, what I would have done to have been there that truly special evening.. Hopefully Taylor will follow through on his promise from Fall 2007 to play more small venues on his new CD tour coming up end of 08 or in 09...

Thanks muc, WSG, for having posted these excellent Grey Eagle photos last March, and keeping them available.. greatly appreciated! ;-)
