Fleet Foxes

After one year to the day of the last post, the blog has reawakened...a long hibernation through a strange year of unsperational (yes, unsperational) music ended last night with a wonderful surprise in the form of the Fleet Foxes. The Fleet Foxes are a five piece band from Seattle who recently signed with Sub Pop records and are on their first national tour with new label mates Blitzen Trapper. These five guys may be clumped into the Band of Horses/My Morning Jacket category, yet stand out from the rest with their gorgeous harmonies and mystical melodies that will guarantee them much deserved exposure in the future. One of my favorite shows in the past six months. Check 'em out now!

Of Montreal are Eagle favs...one of the most lively and energetic bands (and fans) touring today. You've heard a version of their tune reworded for, yes, an Outback Steakhouse commercial. The band claims to have sold the song to increase their theatrical stage show, evident in three large screens projecting animation mixed with live footage, flashing lights, and more outlandish costumes. The show sold out quick-get your tickets early next year to be included in the hysterics.

The Walkmen are a great band from NYC. Featuring raw and solid guitar riffs, huge drums, and a vocalist with one helluva set of pipes, these guys are reminiscent of what rock n' roll was intended to be. I first heard them several years ago, in the same way so many other bands are making their mark these days, in a cinematic car commercial. Back home in New York, the band sells out theaters; however, they don't dip into the southern states very often, so don't miss 'em the next time around.

No matter how excellent your job might be, the time comes a long once in a while when the weekend seems like its inevitably escaped your grasp and will never arrive. Even Hugh Hefner must have the day (albeit rare) when he feels outdone and says, "Enough boobs already!" That's how I felt this Sunday. It was the end of a long, busy week, and a much-needed day of rest was soon at hand. Matters are only made worse when the last day of the week presents you with a difficult task, and in my case that's called listening to music that isn't appealing. Frankly, at the Eagle we don't see much that does not appeal to us, so we're all stunned when it happens, somewhat like a normal person would be when they hear the alarm at 6AM after am impromptu night on the town--it's a rarity, but occasionally does happen. Afterwards, I plan to tell you about what a horrific audible trauma I was put through, but only after drinking a bottle or two (vodka or gin--I see beer WAY too much to go home and drink the stuff) to calm the nerves. A few sheets to the wind, I reluctantly convince myself that the music wasn't that bad, and I'll just let it slide and go to bed instead of dissing some poor chaps on this blog.

Dear readers, I tell you those times have changed. I've pulled myself from a babbling mess on the floor with unflinching persistance to let you in on what terror I saw this evening....First, there was a rumbling, and then some sort of nomadic uncivilzed holler-imagine the members of Pantera getting run over by a NYC subway train. Then there was a wild glow of red light. Next, and--people if you've ever believed me believe me now--I looked to the stage and what did I see but satan himself, holy lucifer, come bursting through the floorboards and take center stage, ablaze in fiery red wash, screeching, moaning, scowering, and spewing the most violent, offensive noise I have heard in many, many years. We're not talking about good ol' Charlie Daniel's 'devil' here, but the lean, mean, kill-your-entire family machine that hails from the firely gates of, well...hell.

Now, in all fairness, I will say that these cultish-looking fellows (and girl) were all extremely kind-hearted, as was their devoted following. But possibly never have I heard such a disaray of sounds, nearly throwing me to the ground in unparalleled agony. After thirty minutes of this, I considered sacrificing Joe, my co-worker, just to make it stop. I really don't know what else to say. It was like death on a Sunday afternoon...into evening...then night...then morning....Just like the Taylor Hicks story two weeks ago, you wouldn't believe it if there were not photographic evidence, so soak up these award-winning captures of the devil himself. Really...I still don't know quite what happened...but if I find out I'll let you know. Just remember: It's good to have an opinion.

So you didn't get into the sold out show by American Idol winner Taylor Hicks at the Orange Peel. Did you sit home and pout about it, or were you one of the twenty-eight people who came to hang out at the Grey Eagle after the Tea Leaf Green show? If you were in the later category, you were treated to an impromtu (free) 45 minute set by Taylor and The Greyhounds, including Supertramps' "Goodbye Stranger," "New York State of Mind," "Minute by Minute," and Elton Johns' "Levon" and "Border Song." Not only was the Eagle open until 3 AM, but it became a smoking bar for two hours. Crazy....If you're in the former category, you'd probably need pictures to believe it, huh? I never thought you'd ask....in response to all the comments, this was not planned; the guys just came by to hang out with some friends and ended up on stage for part of their stay. They were all very pleasant and glad to play music for the small crowd.

Jonathan Richman featuring Tommy Larkins

You know Jonathan Richman as a member of The Modern Lovers. And if that doesn't ring a bell, you definitely know him as the musical narrarator in the hillarious 1998 comedy "There's Something About Mary." Jonathan and Tommy performed a stripped-down set of accoustic numbers to an audience full of long-time fans and few first-timers as well. The guy has a wonderful personality on and off stage, and was fine with photos, as long as I "didn't hurt anyone while doing so." What a guy!

Deerhoof performed to a sold-out crowd on Tuesday (that's Valentines eve for all ya' lovebirds out there). Below is one of the few shots I got during soundcheck. I always ask permission before photographing any musician, however, these guys quickly changed their mind (collective) and decided that they didn't want any more photos. This is a landmark for me-the first band in 13 months to request no photos, so I felt I should proudly post this pic here (which I got permission to take, remind you). And I guess it's only fitting to stop and say thanks to the 107 acts that gladly allowed themselves to be captured in Grey Eagle history throughout the last year. Thanks, guys!

Brett Dennen is a new favorite at the Eagle. He's one of the few performers who has a unique, original voice, unmistakeable with one word. We had heard the buzz for weeks, and the large turnout for Brett's first time in Asheville proved we weren't the only ones glad to have him pay a visit. Josh is an excellent singer/songwritter who's been making a name for himself in the past few years. This was evident from the cherry-red tourbus parked outside on Tuesday. We were pleased to welcome Josh and his band during the first week of their tour, before heading out with John Mayer. The band sounded excellent, accompanied by Josh's girlfriend Paz Suay on several tunes. Fantastic night of music with fantastic folks. I even got a personal tour of the tourbus!

Fred Eaglesmith has been called "the redneck's poet." While he might be poetic, he's from Canada, and I'm not sure if there are rednecks in Canada....he's a superb human being nonetheless, and the crowd was entertained as always by quips and jokes that at times seemed to last longer than his songs. I even think there was a mention of Earthfare, and we all know how rednecks feel about health food stores, right? For the encore, Fred even pretended to play bass and joke about it, as seen below.

Mitch Easter is a North Carolinian who has been a major influence on the southern indie scene as a musician and producer. He fronted the band Let's Active, and is responsible for producing early R.E.M., as well as albums from Game Theory, Velvet Crush, and Pavement. Mitch blazed through a hot set of classics on Thursday night to an intimate crowd of devoted fans. That's his wife, Shalini, on the bass in the pic below. He took a few requests, then concluded the show by bursting through the roof in his glass elevator. A sweet christmas treat.

Here's a shot from Friday night, during the everybodyfields set. They're one of our favorite bands in the area, and if you've never heard them before definitely check 'em out. The trio creates a smooth, sad and beautiful sound that is modern Americana yet timeless...anyways, if you'd like to see more pics of the band they are in the archives of this blog. I've posted this picture because of the guy in the hat. At first he was sitting...then he stood...then he inched closer and closer to the stage, eyes fixed enticingly on Jill, the gal in the photo with the bass, who tried not to notice the guy in the hat...After taking this photo I asked the lad to take a seat, as he was blocking the view of the other hundered people sitting behind him. He mumbled something about being a friend of the band, and he needed to talk to them, other drunk rambles, etc. As I turned around to get a hand removing the chap, he beligerantly made his way onto the stage, inbetween musicians who ignored his presence, knocked over some instruments, lost his footing and fell into a stack of chairs. He crawled across the chairs before falling four or five feet and landing on his face in the darkened stage wing. Personally, I think he deserved a round of applause, but whatever...Hopefully someone reading this will know the guy, tell him that it's not cool to wear a Virginia hat backwards, and please don't show up at the Grey Eagle unless he prepares the staff that he plans to make a complete ass of himself before an amused crowd. We pretty much knew what was in store for a few weeks, but couldn't have expected the magic brought to the stage by 'the Machine,' as Dave calls it. Avas is a hill of volcanic origin in Miskolc, Hungary. It's top, at a sweet 234 meters, is the highest point of the city, upon which stands a looking tower that is the symbol of the city, and provides a breath-taking panorama. Others may say AVAS is the Association of Voluntary Action Scholars. Some would tell you its the Automatic VFR Advisory Service, and even others still would shun the fools who do not recognize the acronym for the Autoritatea pentru Valorificaria Activilor Statilui.

Then I even had a dedicated blog reader tell me it stands for Acoustic Vibration Appreciation Society. That is rather fitting, as the musicians who perform under the moniker sure can play some seriously amazing music, especially considering that this was their first weekend of shows in nearly two years. Members of The Mad Tea Party, The Biscuit Burners, and Snake Oil Medicine Show flowed seamlessly as if they had been playing together since high school...hhmmm...If you missed it, you better be sitting on the top of a mountain in Hungary right now.

There appears to be some controversy surrounding the rumored David Wilcox breath-holding record in a hot tub(See post below, 11.25.06). I have been told that Blind Lemon Jefferson held his breath for sixteen minutes in a horse-diving pool while passing through Asheville in 1923. Now that is just spectacular. If anyone can provide further information about these two talented breath-holding musicians, or would like to challenge Mr. Wilcox, let us know and we'll see if a breath-off can be arranged. There are no longer horse-diving pools, as they have been ruled unethical, so obviously there will be no challenging Blind Lemon's record.

Chris Thile, perhaps best known as the jubilant mandolin player for Nickle Creek, came to the Grey Eagle on Sunday in support of his solo album, 'How to Grow A Woman From the Ground.' Backed by the How to Grow a Band, Chris treated the packed house to an excellent show of original numbers, as well as covers of Gillian Welch's 'Wayside' and a lively rendition of the classic Band tune, 'Ophelia.'

These dudes drove eleven hours from New Orleans to Asheville, and within a few moments of arriving were on stage, adorned in pink feathers, and pounding out sounds, shouts, grunts and moans true to the back streets of the Big Easy. Hinson is a favorite of ours at the Grey Eagle. An outstanding guitar player with an amusing, yet serious stage presence, 'The King' (as he refers to himself) provided a spooky Halloween performance fit to raise the dead. He judged the costume contest between sets, which featured a few tributes to Unknown himself and some of his alter-egos, then launched into a Hendrix number even Jimi would have been proud of.

He's always been a crowd favorite, and contined to please with an excellent show that displayed his wide versatility as a songwriter and performer. Asheville resident David Lamotte has been recording albums and playing live shows for years. During that time he has performed around the world, developed a stage persona equivalent to that of an old friend and confidant, and become one hell of a story teller.

And I can asure you that what you are seeing on stage is not an act, but a sincere and humble being in touch with the essence of raw humanity, anxious to relate truth through experience with all who will listen. The audience hung to every word on Saturday night as David put on a show like no other we've seen.
David added world-class musicians and dancers to his act, displaying to new extent his musical ability throughout the entire show. Several audience members remarked that they had never seen David with a band, and how impressed they were with his versatility to meld with the new members into a top-notch performance. We're proud to call David one of our own.

The Greencards have received more praise in their first three years than most bands get in a full lifetime. Infusing bluegrass and americana with such timeless influences as The Beatles and Bob Dylan (for whom they recently opened an eight-week run of shows), The Greencards have become a prominent act on a scene which initially had been foreign to them.

For a trio who all speak with english accents, they sure do know how to get down when it comes to playing American roots music. They displayed their versatility and impecable craftsmanship at the Grey Eagle on Friday night. An intimate, appreciative Asheville audience made these self-proclaimed "Eurograss" pickers feel right at home.

Matt Verta-Ray and Jon Spencer! Heavy Trash brought their punk rockabilly sounds to the Grey Eagle stage (and as you can see in the pics below, the dancefloor as well) on Wednesday, October 4. Those in attendance can testify to the intensity of rock n' roll abandon displayed by these two infamous rockers, backed by the not-to- be-overlooked Sadies, who performed a set of their own prior to Heavy Trash. An excellent night of nitty-gritty American rock n' roll in its purest form. Thanks to Captain SP for braving the crowd to get these pics...

Carolina Chocolate Drops 9.29.06

The Carolina Chocolate Drops hail from the Durham area of North Carolina, and draw their influences from the music of the foothills of both Carolinas. The Drops fall in the footsteps of traditional black string bands, and carry on the heritage of musicians like Odell and Nate Thompson, Dink Roberts, John Snipes, and countless others. These excellent perfomers did a fine job warming the stage for the Mad Tea Party, with whom they appeared on stage for a few numbers.

The Mad Tea Party 9.29.06

The Mad Tea Party is one of Asheville's most stand-out acts to grace the stage at the Eagle. Built around the primary duo of Jason Krekel and Ami Worthen, the Tea Party's performances have been known to drive crowds into a frenzy, delivering multi-talented musical performances combined with a zany 'anything goes' attitude.This show highlighted that unpredictability rather well, as the stage quickly filled with members of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, family members, artist Phil Cheney painting in time with the music, and an audience hanging onto every last note.
The final performance of the evening featured Jason and his father sharing vocal duties, alongside members of the Reigning Sound, more family members then you could shake a stick at, and Reece (Firecracker Jazz Band, Squirrel Nut Zippers) and Jake(The Blue Rags)dueling on the Grand Piano. Another excellent performance from the MTP.

The Long Winters 9.24.06

The Long Winters came to the Grey Eagle fresh off the Deathcab For Cutie tour. They've been on the road supporting their third CD release "Putting the Days to Bed," a jubilant blend of pop-driven guitar tunes and commanding lyrical nuances that have allowed the band a good deal of interest from the music media in recent weeks.
Singer John Roderick displayed an appealing stage presence; taking requests from the audience and playing it more than cool when a fence jummper ended up on stage with them, claiming to be "Sherriff 420." A professional band who deserves all the attention they are sure to receive.

The Hellsayers, fronted by lyricist-extraordinare Wayne Robbins, have fine-tuned their form of Americana Noir over the past several years into a sound that is unlike any other to come from the North Carolina music scene.
Dark melodious rhythms accented by catchy lap steel phrasing and rich, imaginative lyrics have earned these Ashevillians opening slots for My Morning Jacket and Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. However, trying to get any of these individuals to actually say 'hell' is harder than...hmmmm...what's the word I'm searching for?...

Richard is another long-time performer and friend of the Eagle. He's become known for playing sets of music that flow seamlessly from one tune to the next, signified by his wandering lyrical melodies and poignant, time-tested voice. The most common remark about Richard's music is that it's strangely familiar, yet unplaceable. Some say this is because he could be heard on a Volkswagen commercial (during the height of those trendy shorts a few years back). I'm convinced, however, that he's one of those hypnotic performers who lures you under his spell of mad urban lyricism and layers of steady, unbroken guitars, shaking your soul before leaving you calm and sedated moments later. Richard was accompanied by Doug Gillard (Guided By Voices) during this particualr performance.

Eric Bachmann 9.23.06

Eric Bachmann was a member of the Archers of Loaf back in the good ol' nineties. After the AOL disbanded, Eric took a new direction, leaving behind the fast-paced indie rock scene for a more delicate and somber sound. After playing under the moniker Crooked Fingers since 2000, Eric came out from behind the mask, releasing "To The Races" under his own name in 2006. The disk was recorded in an old hotel in the Outer Banks right here in North Carolina, and I just can't stop listening to it myself. Eric's performance was just as soothing, including tunes from the disc as well as numbers from each of the Crooked Fingers albums.

How To Get A Gig (Or Not)

I have nothing to do with booking bands at the Grey Eagle, (ask and you will find that I love making suggestions), but I do receive phone calls every night and they're all the same: The voice on the other end has/works for a band who is amazing (but we've never heard of), they're guaranteed to pack the place, and would it be possible to get one of the next three Saturday nights for a show? I usually try to be sympathetic with that voice and guide them through the steps to securing a possible gig, and they always sound rather persistent and indifferent to the advice I have given them. So, if by chance anyone stumbling upon this 'review' is considering being that voice in the future, allow me to provide you with this juicy insider knowledge.
1) Anyone who calls during 'business hours' might as well have 'inexperienced' stamped on their forehead. This is like calling a restaurant asking for a job during Friday night dinner. You will never get a gig at this time of night over the phone, no matter how good you are. Never.
2) Sure you may be better than Jimmy Page on guitar, but a music venue needs to know you will draw a crowd. The Grey Eagle has a solid past of helping artists build strong fanbases and careers through opportunity, but you must find a method of ensuring you will draw a crowd. Which leads to
3) Be professional. Send a proper package with a sample of music and a brief bio to the right people at the right address. Jeff Foxworthy and Jimmy Landrum don't live here.
And last but not least:
4) A music venue, such as the Grey Eagle, is booked several months ahead of schedule. Waltzing in and asumming you'll get a Saturday night is a sure way to not get what you want.
So please use common sense and be professional. You are afterall applying for a job. Put together your 'resume,' send it to 185 Clingman Ave. Asheville, NC 28801, wait an appropriate amount of time, and followup with an email to booking@thegreyeagle.com. this is the best route to scoring that gig at the eagle and anyplace else where you don't plan on playing Jimmy Buffet covers.

Long Way to Drive

This guy told us he drove from Vermont with his girlfriend and ended up at the Grey Eagle. That's possibly the longest anyone has ever driven to the eagle who was not perfoming on stage. Rodney Crowell 9.15.06

Rodney and his band played a two hour show to a packed house on Friday, September 19. Audience favs included "Sin City," Crowell's tribute to Gram Parsons, and "Like a Rolling Stone," during which the band exchanged lyrics with the crowd throughout the entire number. Rodney's dog, Turdhound, kept the greenroom in orderly fashion throughout the show. Yeah, dog.

Rodney's album "The Outsider" was the #5 album of 2005 on WNCW's top 100. One week after this performance he was awarded the lifetime acheivement award for songwritting at the Americana Music Awards in Nashville. Find tour dates, history and more at the official Rodney Crowell homepage.

So my details are a bit rusty on Sparklehorse, but here's what I've got: These guys, led by Mark Linkous, are (to borrow a popular t-shirt slogan)huge in Europe, and we at the Eagle were lucky enough to have them on one of their six (or so) American dates before heading overseas. All in attendance seemed impressed by their short yet superb set of sad-beautiful-pop-electro-boom-bang-boom-retro-mod-melancholy sound. Appropriately, the photo below was taken during the catchy number "Don't Take My Sunshine Away."

If you've lived in Asheville for more than a week or two, you must've heard of Tyler Ramsey. Tyler is the most frequent local musician to perform at the Eagle, and we're always glad to have him on stage. This particular evening he performed a beautiful set of accoustic tunes to an appreciative audience before Sparklehorse. I understand he's working on some songs in spanish, como no?

Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men brought their sweet sounds of the west to the Eagle on Tuesday, September 12. Featuring down home lyrics and soulful melodies ontop of a down-and-dirty attitude, this show was a must for any true guitar fan. Dave, besides being a phenomenal player, makes some of the best guitar pickin' faces I've seen in a really long time...I'd have to post over fifty pictures to display the range of smirks and grins this guy has in his bag, so instead I'll leave you with these, and encourage you to come see for yourself the next time around.

Ah yes, Cary Fridley...scroll through the archives and you will see Cary playing with several different acts, displaying her wide range and versatility of style. For those who don't know, Cary was a member of the wonderfully successful old-time group the Freighthoppers, and she has continued to create her own brand of traditional American music; a tasty slice of which she displayed for us on Saturday, August 26. Backed by an all-star cast, Cary performed traditional standards and sneak-peeks from her upcoming album. She plays bass. She likes to sing. She plays the guitar. She even uses her little red tickets in an appropriate manner. She likes cats, but is currently not accepting donations at this time. I've got you bass amp pictures on the way,Cary Fridley!

One Leg Up's new CD is entitled "Pere Lachaise," so it was only appropriate to hold their release party on Bastille Day. One Leg Up has become well known in the southeast for playing their accoustic gypsy jazz and latin groves that could revert even those resting in Pere Lachise to the swingin' streets of the Parisian jazz age. Everyone was there, including an electric pink flamingo with whom I shared a cigarette.

The beauty and purpose of blogs are to allow anyone who desires to speak their mind an open forum to do so. As I somewhat represent an establishment on this particular page, as well as post photos of freinds who often appear in the public eye, I try to remain objective and represent all of them in a positive manner. And if I don't like what I see and hear, then I just don't waste my time posting it, damnit.

With that said, I'll get a little subjective. I've watched Stephanie's Id over the past few years develop into one of the top local drawing acts at the Eagle. And I can honestly say there is not another local or regional act that puts the effort, heart, and soul into their performances as do these guys (and girl!). Each show gets bigger and better, as does their following.

This particular performance, or Idfest as they are often called, included an extensive collection of musicians in party costumes, a full horn section, guest musicians, balloons-a-flyin', and an all-out party crowd in attendance. Throughout the evening performances were held in almost every corner of the venue, from the front door to the patio stage to the mainstage and then I just lost track of where it was all coming from.

So if you haven't been out to see the enticing music-filled event know as Idfest, you're missing the best show in town. Keep yourself posted, as there's always another just around the corner.

Bobby Bare Jr.'s Young Criminals Starvation League 6.21.06

Bobby Bare Jr. is on the road constantly, and we see him at the Grey Eagle what seems like every two or three months. Every show features a different musical line-up which always leaves the door open for musical spontaniety and originality. We've even seen him play with his back thrown out and a neck brace on. If that's not rock n' roll then I emplore you people, just what is?

The show on Wednesday was his most high energy show at the eagle to date; complete with mood lighting and a karate-kickin' guitar player. Think Morphine meets Steppenwolf with a new-found love for Gram Parsons.

I didn't get too many shots of these guys because they kept me busy. Which is a good thing. Since releasing "Everything All the Time" in early 2006 they've risen to critical acclaim and went on to play Letterman a few days after this show. Think My Morning Jacket with a little more melody. Props to my hometown boy Ben!

I don't know what these guys are singing. I don't know what these guys were saying when they talked to me. The few words of english I did manage to comprehend were once removed from Shakespeare-meets-Jesus in a mad prophetic light. They were extremely pleasant people otherwise, and if I knew what they were saying, I'd be able to tell you confidently that they're the greatest rock n'roll band to come along in the past twetny years.

However, since they may be singing about my mother in that fantastic harmony, layered psychedelic guitar drones and hammered out solos, I'll tell you they are the greatest Sweedish band you'll ever have the chance to see. It's actually better this way, you see, because each of us can imagine for ourselves what the lyrics mean to "Du E For Fin For Mig." Personally, I believe they're all about good ol' bar-b-que. Ever seen a long haired sweedish man eat bar-b-que before? If not, then it's something to add to the list before you die...

Shawn Mullins with Clay Cook 6.8.06

Shawn is a friend of the Grey Eagle. He played the Grand Reopening back in 2005. This show he brought Clay Cook with him to collaborate on some tunes. Clay Cook is responsible for writing a good majority of the first John Mayer album, some of which were heard in it's intended form on Thursday.

Mike Compton has been called the leading interpreter of Bill Monroe's mandolin style. He can be heard continuously throughout the ever popular movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" and The "Down From the Mountain" CD and tour. This show was reminiscent of old friends getting together to pick a few tunes in someone's livingroom. Mike and David ran through several choice numbers before spontaneously improvising the second half of the show, allowing their virtuosity to shine before an intimate audience of attentive listeners.

Hem brought their brand of soothing, country-infused pop before a packed house on June 6. Warming vocals conjured up picturesque landscapes amid perfectly-spaced tinkling pianos and pedal guitars in this Brooklyn-based quintet. I'd call it lullaby campfire music that you'd want to fall asleep to under the stars. We had the stars, but it was too hot build a fire so we had to do without. The music was excellent nonetheless.

If you don't know Hinson, then here's the scenario: He comes in from the back of the room, dressed like 'vampire elvis,' chauffer in tow, whips out guns and begins to fire away as he reaches the stage (don't worry, folks! they're only cap guns), he's handed his guitar by the chauffer, who remains on stage without moving a muscle the entire show, then we all get an earful of mind-blowing guitar playing. Rock-a-billy at times, Hendrix at other times. He's even got a show on Cartoon Network. Immediately he was asked to play on Halloween, which he accepted. Fright night will never be the same...
